On Video Gaming...
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?ar ticle_id=211273
Spore is on it's way. A game I've been waiting for for at least 3 years.
Why?
Because if Will Wright does what he has done at least twice before (with SimCity and then the Sims.. and let's not forget the oft forgotten but totally fun SimAnt) Spore is going to change gaming.
That's what is interesting about the Sims. Hardcore gamers got into it for all the detail work. Lax gamers got into it because it was kind of low maintenance. In the end, everybody went 'HOLY FUCK I SPENT A MONTH LIVING SOMEONE ELSES COMPUTER LIFE' and moved on... but that was after every gamer ever did that. Ever. Evereverever. Not forgetting of course adventures in murder, alien abduction, and fucking the housekeeper... all fantastic Sims variables.
Now Spore. Start as a fucking zygote and become the King of the Universe... but not really. That's where Spore is even more interesting. When you go and explore space (after you've achieved space exploration) - you are exploring the worlds created and manipulated by other people. I'm not sure the level of interactivity, but the basic idea that this game is a single person adventure, but with a glimmer into an online world is excellent.
I don't personally give much of a shit about the online experience of a game.. I don't like deathmatch.. I barely like two players in the same room. I DO like the idea that I can enjoy seeing other people's weird creations... and destroy or befriend them... and they know it without getting all pissy on me.
Spore is soon.. yay.
